Botox is a natural, purified form of the botulinum toxin injections in a microscopic dose that is not poisonous. It temporarily relaxes the expressive facial muscles which cause fine lines and wrinkles. This particular brand of botulinum toxin was first cleared for use by The Food and Drug Administration, making it the world’s first injectable approved to target wrinkles and fine lines. Botox is an established brand name and can also treat conditions like hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

After Botox treatment, you are advised to avoid touching or massaging the injected area for at least six hours. You are also advised to avoid anything that causes excessive blood flow to the face, such as bending over for long periods of time, engaging in strenuous exercise for four hours afterwards, or going to steam baths or saunas. This ensures best results and avoids any small potential risk of the product migrating from the treated area. After six hours, you can clean the area, but we advise against applying any makeup until 24 hours after treatment to avoid potentially irritating the injection site.

Results from Botox treatment may become noticeable in the days following the procedure, with the full effects typically visible a few weeks after treatment. The longevity of the treatment varies among individuals, but many patients experience a significant reduction in the appearance of lines for several months. It’s important to consult with medical experts during the initial consultation to make an informed decision based on individual factors and expectations.

While there is no real downtime or side effects associated with Botox anti wrinkle injections, it is important to note that you may encounter some slight bruising and swelling directly after treatment, due to the needle. You may also be able to see small pin-prick marks at the injection site. This can easily be masked by make-up after 24 hours. Patients can resume their usual activities straight away, and can also fly post-treatment.

If a high amount of product is injected, expression will be blunted and the forehead and facial wrinkles may develop a smooth, shiny appearance. The vast majority of our patients want a very natural result, so we put in less product. This retains some expression, and avoids a shiny appearance.

Some people notice they have excessive squaring of the jaw, which is usually due to an overactive masseter muscle (jaw muscle). We can use advanced techniques with Botox to reduce activity in this muscle (muscle movements) to create a softer contour to the jaw.

Botox injections are FDA approved and bear the CE mark that indicates it conforms to European standards for health and safety. Any medication has risks, but Botox has been used on tens of millions of patients and has an extremely strong safety record. Botox acts only on muscles and sweat glands, and tends to remain active in the area it is injected, with very few cases of migration. No. There are other licensed brands of botulinum toxin injections, but Botox is the licensed brand name for a specific form of botulinum toxin type A, listed by the FDA as non-interchangeable. No other botulinum toxin type A product can call itself Botox or claim the same efficacy. At Aesthetic Edge, we exclusively use Botox, manufactured by Allergan.

On average, Botox results typically last around 3 to 4 months, effectively reducing the depth of wrinkles. However, after this period, your muscles gradually regain their ability to move, and wrinkles might reappear.
